Preventing Breast Cancer
1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. You don’t have to be one of them. Breast cancer is a disease in which breast cells grow at an uncontrollable rate.
There are many kinds of breast cancer but the most common are “invasive ductal carcinoma” and “invasive lobular carcinoma.” According to the CDC, about 220,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women (the most commonly found cancer in females) and about 2,000 in men each year.
About 40,000 women and 400 men in the U.S. die each year from breast cancer. As you get older, the risk for breast cancer increases. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help prevent this disease:
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Eat a diet that is rich in colorful, natural pigments, naturally detoxifies the body, minimizes the intake of meat and animal products, avoids junk foods that are high in fat and sugar
- Decrease sodium intake and increase potassium intake
- Increase intake of omega-3 fatty acids while decreasing intake of omega-6
- Exercise at least 4 hours a week
- Get enough sleep
- Avoid exposure to carcinogens and toxic chemicals that disrupt the normal function of the body
- Quit smoking and drinking
- Limit exposure to radiation from medical tests
